Description:
This playing deck features illustrations by Hugh Thomson (1860-1920) for the works of Jane Austen (1775-1817). Each suit corresponds to a different novel: hearts = Sense and Sensibility (1811); diamonds = Pride and Prejudice (1813); clubs = Emma (1815); spades = Persuasion (1818). The card background is from the unfinished manuscript The Watsons (c. 1804), the architectural drawings are by Colen Campbell from Vitruvius Britannicus (1715-25) and the portrait is by William Home Lizars (1869).
